The Age of Romanticism and the making of a nation...

We've spent some time discussing excerpts from "Selections from the Prison Notebooks of Antonio Gramsci" in class. Today we will use Gramsci's theories on hegemony, intellectuals, and the characterization superstructures to develop an analysis of U.S. development during the Age of Romanticism. Read the selection about The Age of Romanticism from the Concise Anthology of American Literature included in your packet. Use this, the excerpt we've discussed, and the sections labeled "Organic Intellectuals" and "Ideological Hegemony" in "Antonio Gramsci and Education" to answer the following question:

Does this account of the Age of Romanticism describe any beginning establishments of hegemonic and/or counter-hegemonic ideologies and institutions?

Make sure you develop a clear argument with citations from all three sources. Make sure you use MLA format.
